Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Iarussi Studio different from other faux finishers?

At Iarussi Studio, we innovate plaster by combining artistry, material science, and emerging design trends. Each finish is developed with our proprietary, purpose-built products, mixed uniquely for its role in the surface. These complex processes can only be executed by trained artists, ensuring that every wall reflects true craftsmanship, precision, and the distinctive quality that defines our studio.

Product Process and Planning

How does the project process work?

Begin by submitting a proposal request here: Request a Proposal. Once received, we’ll follow up with either a brief consultation or a direct quote, depending on the finish you've selected. After you review and approve the quote, we’ll provide our client contract (available here: Client Contract). A 50% deposit secures your place in our schedule, and once processed, we reserve the next available start date that aligns with your timeline.

How much lead time is required before a project begins?

We require a minimum of three weeks between receiving your deposit and the project start date. This window allows time for scheduling, material preparation, and final color sample approval, ensuring your finish is executed with the accuracy and care it deserves.

How do I measure my walls and ceilings for a quote?

To provide an accurate estimate, measure each wall individually by recording its length and height—do not rely on the room’s total square footage.

If you want the entire room finished, include:

  • All walls: Measure the height from floor to ceiling and the length of each wall.

  • Ceiling (optional): Measure the length and width of the ceiling as you would a wall.

Once you have each measurement, you can provide them to us, and we’ll calculate a quote based on the total wall and ceiling surfaces to be finished.

How should I provide measurements in the proposal request form?

When requesting a proposal for a room, please include the length, width, and height of each wall. If you would like the ceiling finished, be sure to note its dimensions as well.

If I have multiple spaces, how should I complete my proposal request form?

If you have multiple spaces that you are requesting a proposal for, please send a separate request form for each space/room. You can specify the same client name/address or PO number and we can send one proposal.

If I have multiple spaces, how should I complete my proposal request form?

For multiple spaces or rooms, please submit a separate proposal request form for each area. This ensures we can accurately calculate materials, labor, and scheduling for each space. You may reference the same client name, address, or purchase order across forms, and we can consolidate proposals if needed for your convenience.

What is your sample policy?

For every approved project, we provide one complimentary sample per surface. Additional samples can be purchased for $375 each.

When will I receive my sample?

When will I receive my custom, color-matched sample?

Your sample will be mailed within 7–14 days after we receive your deposit, ensuring it arrives promptly for your review.

Do you do exterior projects?

Some of our finishes can be applied to exterior surfaces; this is noted on each finish’s page. For example, Lime Wash works beautifully both indoors and outdoors. Inside, it typically has a soft, suede-like appearance, while on exterior walls it will naturally weather over time, developing a gentle, elegant patina.

Product and Finish Details

Are your finishes patchable?

Yes—Iarussi Studio plaster finishes can be patched. While patched areas may be visible, many clients appreciate the natural character this adds, as it enhances the authentic, handcrafted look of the surface.

What products are used for wall finishes?

We use a variety of specialized plasters, washes, pigments, and varnishes, depending on the finish. Detailed information on materials and application techniques can be found at the bottom of each finish’s page.

Are your products low in VOCs?

All of our paints and plasters are low- to no-VOC. For specifics, please refer to the product details on each finish page.

Where are Iarussi Studio products made?

All Iarussi Studio products are carefully formulated and mixed by hand in our Minneapolis, Minnesota studio.

How should I approve a color sample?

We strongly recommend placing your color sample in the actual space where the finish will be applied for 48–72 hours. This allows you to see how the color evolves under the room’s natural and artificial lighting throughout the day. You might be surprised at how much a color can shift depending on its environment and the time of day.

Can you match any color?

We can match most paint color hues, within the limitations of each finish. Some surfaces are best suited to lighter tones, while others cannot be applied in pure white. For specific color restrictions, please refer to the details at the bottom of the finish page you’re interested in.

What sheens are available?

Most of our finishes can be customized with a range of sheens, including dead flat (the natural look if no varnish is added), flat, eggshell, low-sheen (satin), gloss, wax gloss, and polished wax gloss. Not all finishes are compatible with every varnish, as some sheens may alter the intended appearance. For specific varnish recommendations, please refer to the finish page.

What substrates can Iarussi surfaces be applied to?

Recommended substrates for each finish are listed on the individual finish pages to ensure optimal results.

Do all colors have the same movement quality?

In general, lighter colors show less visual movement, while deeper or more pigmented tones reveal greater depth and texture. The richness of a color often enhances the natural variation and character of each finish.

Care and Maintenance

How should I care for my wall finish?

For routine cleaning, gently blot any scuffs or marks with a lightly damp microfiber cloth—avoid rubbing back and forth. Sealed surfaces release stains more easily, so we recommend applying a protective varnish in high-traffic areas. Even a flat varnish provides semi-wipeable protection, allowing your finish to be lightly cleaned without compromising its texture or appearance.

Can I seal my finish without changing the look?
Yes! All of our finishes are sealed with a dead-flat sealer, which adds durability while maintaining an ultra-low sheen. This subtle finish is carefully accounted for in our design process, so it preserves the traditional look without noticeable change.

For even greater protection, we recommend a flat varnish. It stays very close to the classic appearance while offering enhanced durability. Ultimately, the choice comes down to what’s most important to you: preserving the traditional look or maximizing durability.

Should I seal my finish?

Sealing your Iarussi surface isn’t always required. Factors like location, frequency of contact, and intended use all play a role in the decision. In general, we recommend sealing Roman Clay finishes in high-traffic areas to provide extra protection while maintaining the integrity of the design.
